As a young man, Richard Joyce, set out in 1675 from his home in the small fishing village of Claddagh on the shores of Galway Bay. When he regained his freedom, Richard's master offered him his daughter's hand in marriage, together with half his fortune, if he would remain with him. The Irishman, however, had never forgotten the country of his birth and chose to return home to his beloved Galway Bay. He created his magical Claddagh design in Ireland in 1689 and presented a ring of his own making to his lifelong love and future bride.
