The True Love Story Of Ireland’s Impossibly Romantic Claddagh Ring
Richard Joyce was a young man when he set sail from the small fishing village of Claddagh in 1675 for the British West Indies. He was not far into the voyage when a pirate ship captured his vessel and everyone on board, including Richard was sold into slavery on the North African Barbary Coast.
For the next 14 years, Richard worked as a jeweller and goldsmith for his new owner but never gave up on his goal of one day returning home. In 1689, his opportunity finally came.
Although his former master offered him a fortune and pleaded with him to remain in Africa, nothing could sway his decision to make the dangerous journey back to Ireland. He created the first of his iconic rings upon his return and ultimately married the long-lost love of his life, reunited after all their long years spent apart.
