In 1775, a young Richard Joyce left his hometown of Claddagh, then a small fishing village on the shores of Galway Bay, to seek his fortune in the British West Indies. Barbary Pirates boarded his ship, and all passengers and crew were sold into servitude in North Africa. Richard was apprenticed to a goldsmith and jeweller and used his 14 years in captivity to master his trade.
When he returned to Ireland in 1689, he brought his timeless vision of romantic love with him. He forged the first of his iconic rings and presented it to his childhood sweetheart and future wife to ask her hand in marriage. The heart represents the unbreakable love that outlasted their time apart, the crown their loyalty to each other during his 14 years of servitude, and the hands their lifelong friendship ever after.
