Richard Joyce set out for the British West Indies in 1675, but his ship was intercepted by Barbary pirates, and he was sold into slavery on the North African Coast. The Irishman was apprenticed as a jeweller and goldsmith by his new owner, and he spent the next 14 years in servitude, mastering his trade but never giving up on his dream of returning home to Ireland. 

His dream came true in 1689, and Richard made the dangerous return journey to Galway Bay. Home at last, he forged the first of his now world-famous Claddagh rings and won his beloved childhood sweetheart's hand in marriage.

He chose the heart to represent the love that outlasted their time apart, the crown the loyalty they kept for each other, and the hands to symbolise the friendship that would bind them together for a lifetime.
