The Claddagh is an age-old symbol of love, loyalty, and friendship. The heart knows no borders once it finds true love. Richard Joyce, the creator of the Claddagh design, set sail from his hometown of Claddagh in 1675, to seek his fortune in the faraway British West Indies. Not far into the voyage, his ship was intercepted by a Barbary pirate vessel, and Richard, together with everyone else on board, was sold into servitude. His master, noting his good eye and steady hand, apprenticed him as a goldsmith and jeweller, and the steadfast Irishman spent the next 14 years perfecting his craft.

In 1689, Richard regained his freedom and set sail for his beloved Ireland once more, where he designed the now iconic Claddagh ring to present to his long-lost sweetheart and future wife. He chose the crown to represent their loyalty, the hands, their friendship, and the heart, the undying true love that overcame all obstacles and brought them home together once more.
