The history of the Claddagh Engagement ring dates back to the 17th century when master silversmith Richard Joyce created the unique design to woo his childhood sweetheart. Joyce was stolen by Barbary pirates, but managed to return to the small town of Claddagh near modern-day Galway City 14 years later to declare his love.
His conception of the ring includes two hands of friendship that offer the heart to a loved one and then hold that love securely. The crown on the heart is a symbol of loyalty.
