The Claddagh tradition dates back to 1675, when the creator of the iconic design, Richard Joyce, left Ireland's windswept Atlantic coastline in search of a better life for himself and his family. Pirates overtook his ship, and Richard was sold into servitude on the North African Barbary coast.
The determined Irishman never gave up hope of seeing his home once more and spent the next 14 years mastering his trade as goldsmith and jeweller, with the vision of the girl he left behind never far from his mind. In 1689, his opportunity came, and he created the first Claddagh ring to ask the hand of his sweetheart and future wife in marriage.
The ancient Celtic knotwork featured in this piece is crafted from an unbroken swirling line, signifying endless love and eternal life.
