Upon his return to Ireland, he created his world-famous symbol of love, loyalty, and friendship and presented it to his childhood sweetheart and future wife.
He chose the heart to represent his undying love, the crown, unshakable loyalty, and the hands, the true friendship that never dimmed during the years the two lovers were apart.
