The incredible story of Richard Joyce's capture and return to Ireland is worthy of a big-screen romantic movie production. In 1675, the young Irishman set sail for the West Indies, seeking his fortune in faraway lands. His ship was not far into the voyage when they were boarded by Barbary pirates, and all passengers and crew were sold into slavery in North Africa.
Richard's new owner saw the young man's steady hand and eye for detail and apprenticed him as a goldsmith and jeweler. For the next 14 years, the Galway native perfected his craft, all the while dreaming of regaining his freedom and returning to his childhood sweetheart in Ireland. In 1689, his opportunity came, and despite offers of wealth and marriage into his former master's family, Joyce chose to leave for Ireland in search of his long-lost love.
When he found her still waiting for him, he created the Claddagh design for his future wife, with the heart to represent their love, the hands, their undying friendship, and the crown, the unshakable loyalty that overcame all obstacles to bring them back together.
