The Claddagh tradition dates back to 1675 when the design's creator, Richard Joyce, set sail for the British West Indies to make his fortune. North African pirates intercepted his ship, and he was taken into captivity on the infamous Barbary coast.
The young Irishman's new master saw his potential as a goldsmith and jeweler and apprenticed him in his workshop. The Galway native set to work, perfecting his craft and always dreaming of one day returning to Ireland. Fourteen years later, the dream came true, and Richard refused his master's offer of his daughter's hand in marriage and a dowry fortune if he would stay with them in Barbary. Instead, he chose to make the hazardous return journey to Claddagh.
In Ireland once more, Richard created the first of his iconic Claddagh rings for his childhood sweetheart and future wife, choosing the hands to represent their friendship, the crown, their loyalty, and the heart, their undying true love that ultimately conquered all.
