In 1675, Richard Joyce set out from the small fishing village of Claddagh to seek his fortune overseas. His ship was not far out to sea when Barbary pirates captured the vessel and sold everyone on board, including Richard, into slavery on the North African coast.
The young Irishman's new master recognised his potential as a goldsmith and apprenticed him to the trade. For the next 14 years, the Galway native set to work perfecting his craft, always dreaming of one day returning home to the sweetheart he left behind.
Richard’s opportunity came in 1689, and despite his master's offer of a dowry fortune and his daughter's hand in marriage, he chose instead to make the dangerous return journey to Ireland. In Claddagh, once more, he created the first of his iconic rings for his childhood love and future wife, with the hands to represent their friendship, the crown their loyalty, and the heart their undying love that conquered all.
