The story of the Claddagh Ring begins in late 17th century Ireland in the small fishing village of Claddagh on the shores of Galway Bay. A young Richard Joyce left his beloved hometown and childhood sweetheart in 1675 to travel to the British West Indies in search of his destiny and fortune.
As luck would have it, Barbary pirates boarded the ship, and Richard, along with all passengers and crew, was sold into servitude on the African north coast. He spent the next 14 years apprenticed to his new master as a jeweler and goldsmith. When the opportunity came in 1689 for him to return home, despite offers of wealth and the hand of his master’s daughter in marriage, he didn't hesitate to set sail for Ireland and his long lost love once more.
In Galway, Richard created his iconic design, choosing the heart to represent undying love, the crown to symbolize loyalty, and the hands to represent the friendship that underpins every true romance. He presented the ring to his sweetheart, who had waited for him faithfully during their long separation, and the soulmates remained together forever after.
