In 1675, Richard Joyce, the inspired romantic who created the original Claddagh ring, left Ireland to seek his fortune overseas in the British West Indies. The ship he traveled on was boarded by a Barbary pirate vessel, and he was sold into slavery on the North African coast.
Richard spent the next 14 years working for his master as a goldsmith and jeweler, but never gave up hope of returning once more to Ireland. In 1689, he regained his freedom and turned down his former master's offer of a dowry fortune and his only daughter's hand in marriage if he would stay with them in Africa.
In Ireland once more, Richard created the first Claddagh ring for his future wife and childhood sweetheart with the heart to represent their undying love, the crown, their unbreakable loyalty, and the hands, their friendship that would last a lifetime, and more.
