In 1675, a young Richard Joyce left Galway to make his fortune overseas. As luck would have it, his ship was intercepted by pirates, and he, along with every other soul on board, was sold into slavery on the North African Barbary Coast. He spent the next 14 years apprenticed to his new owner as a goldsmith but never gave up on his dream of one day returning home if and when the opportunity would arise.
In 1689 his chance came, and despite an offer from his master to marry his daughter and receive a dowry fortune if he would stay in Barbary, Richard did not hesitate to make the dangerous journey back to Galway Bay. Safe in Ireland once more, he created the first Claddagh ring for his beloved childhood sweetheart and soon-to-be future wife. The ring you see today represents their unbreakable bond of love that conquered all.
