During 14 years of service, he never forgot his native land or the love he left behind on the quays as his ship left the harbor. When he regained his freedom in 1689, he immediately returned to the love of his life in Ireland, and forged the first Claddagh ring for his bride-to-be. He chose the heart to represent their undying love, the hands, the profound friendship that withstood their long time apart, and the crown the loyalty they would hold for each other ever after.
